Boxing: Victor Ortiz vs Brandon Rios announced for an August 4th PBC card

first_imgAdvertisementIt looks like Brandon Rios and Victor Ortiz may finally meet in a long overdue grudge match, The bitter rivals are reportedly close to being able to finally settle their differences inside the ring. While the deal can’t be confirmed just yet, the two are likely to headline a August 4th, PBC card.Ortiz (32-6-3, 25KOs) is coming off of what most consider a very fortunate draw again Devon Alexander back in February. That very same month Rios (34-4-1, 25KOs)  was stopped in the 9th round against Danny Garcia.Rios, 32, was knocked out by Danny Garcia on February 17, his first serious opponent since a 2015 loss to Tim Bradley. The former lightweight titleholder is 5-3 in his last eight, dating back to 2012.While both of these guys are clearly past their prime this fight should still provide fireworks. If finalized the fight will either take place in either California at the Stub Hub center or in Texas according to sources.Advertisementlast_img read more

Girona FC take on the best of India and Spain at Chess

first_imgKochi, July 28 (PTI) Spanish top division side Girona FC, currently in India, swapped football for chess pieces as they played a friendly tournament against the Spanish and the Indian national chess teams. The Spanish chess team is in India to prepare for the 43rd Chess Olympiad in September while Girona FC is competing in the Toyota Yaris LaLiga World Tournament. It has been a highly memorable trip to India for the LaLiga side, who beat Australia’s Melbourne City FC 6-0 in their opening fixture. The final fixture of the three team tournament will see hosts Kerala Blasters face Girona FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi. However, the Spanish side are looking to leave their mark off the pitch as well as on it, as they become the first LaLiga side to make the trip to India. Bernardo Espinosa, Girona FC player, said, “It was a wonderful experience to get to meet professional chess players and experience the sport with them. I was thrilled to see how well prepared these players were and people also got see us in other ways apart from football.” Girona FC coach, Eusebio Sacristán also played a friendly match against the chess team coach, David Martinez. “When such popular teams come to India and promote a niche sport like chess, it really boosts the chess culture in India and the world. It was great interacting with the players and we hope to see more LaLiga teams come to India and interact with us,”Indian chess player, SL Narayanan, said. Ontario Progressive Conservatives working to hold contest to find new leader

first_imgTORONTO – Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives continued to grapple with a sexual misconduct scandal Monday as party brass began to lay out the groundwork for a leadership contest to be held just months before the June provincial election. In the span of five days, the party saw both its leader, Patrick Brown, and president, Rick Dykstra, step down amid sexual misconduct allegations.Brown’s resignations on Wednesday left the party, which had been leading in the polls, scrambling to find a new leader in time for the election.A decision by caucus to have interim leader Vic Fedeli take the Tories through the spring vote was later overturned by the party’s executive, which voted in favour of a leadership race.Fedeli, a former finance critic, was the only candidate to officially enter the race until Monday afternoon, when a controversial political figure threw his hat in the ring.Doug Ford, former Toronto city councillor and brother to the city’s late former mayor Rob Ford, announced he was entering the race to save the party from what he called political “elites.”“The elites of this party, the ones who shut out the grassroots, do not want me in this race,” he told reporters at his family’s home in west Toronto. “I’m here to give a voice … to the hardworking taxpayers of this province, people who have been ignored for far too long.”A party committee is hammering down the rules and the date of a leadership contest to later be approved by the party executive.“We’re looking forward to coming back to them with those rules that will set out what a leadership process could look like to allow us to elect a new leader that the party would be proud to take to Ontarians,” said committee chairman Hartley Lefton.Lefton said the Tories will stick to the one-member one-vote rule, which would open the voting up to the party’s 200,000 members. It’s not yet clear when the convention will be held, but a permanent party leader will be in place by the end of March, Lefton said.“The (party) executive set an outside date of March 24 but realistically it could be any time between now and then,” he said.Former Postmedia executive Rod Phillips, a Progressive Conservative candidate in the riding of Ajax., Ont., who is considering entering the race, said it is important that all party members have a say in who leads them in the next election.Phillips and Caroline Mulroney, another potential leadership candidate, had opposed the caucus proposal to have Fedeli become permanent leader.“To present a strong, unified, Ontario PC party that can win against (Premier) Kathleen Wynne, the leader who takes us through the election must have a clear mandate from all members of the Ontario PC Party,” he said in a statement on Friday. “Our party is made up of some 200,000 members across our province. This isn’t without its challenges, given the timelines, but it is the right thing to do.”Meanwhile, the party appointed a new president on Monday to replace Dykstra, who resigned on the weekend, just hours after Maclean’s magazine published a report in which a woman alleged she was a young Conservative staffer in Ottawa when she was sexually assaulting by Dykstra in 2014, when he was an MP. The allegations have not been verified by The Canadian Press and Dykstra has not responded to requests for comment.Fedeli said he was shocked and disgusted by the allegations and said he’d take steps to ensure the workplace is safe for party members and staffers.Maclean’s said the staffer reported the incident to Ottawa police in 2014, alleging Dykstra sexually assaulted her after a party. The magazine reported that senior Conservative campaign operatives were aware of the allegations and decided to allow him to run in the 2015 election anyway. The woman, who was not named, told the magazine she was in Dykstra’s apartment when he allegedly cornered her in his bedroom and “forced” her to perform oral sex on him. She told the magazine she fled the apartment when Dykstra left the room.Maclean’s said the woman gave police a statement but ultimately decided not to proceed with the case. Ottawa police said Monday that they could not confirm details of the case as no charges were laid.Dykstra went on to lose his St. Catharines, Ont., riding, and became president of Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives. Long-time activist Jag Badwal has replaced him.last_img read more

UK wages rising at decade high while employment hits record

first_imgLONDON — Official figures show that wages in Britain are rising at their fastest rate in a decade while employment has hit a record high. The Office for National Statistics said Tuesday that average earnings were up 3.3 per cent in the three months to October from the year before. That’s the highest rate since the summer of 2008, just before the most acute phase of the global financial crisis. Meanwhile, employment rose by 79,000 to 32.48 million. The figures provide further evidence that the labour market remains robust despite the uncertainty surrounding Brexit. However, with concerns rising that Britain may crash out of the European Union in March with no deal, there are worries that firms may start laying off staff as they put in place contingency measures. The Associated Presslast_img read more

The NHL Has Accomplished Its Goals

Holding stick0.110.07-0.03 Roughing0.840.67-0.18 Interference0.640.71+0.08 Cross checking0.300.31+0.01 If you’ve been paying attention to the 2017-18 NHL season, you may have noticed something: There is no shortage of goals. We’re more than a third of the way through the season, and scores are, on average, the highest they’ve been since 2005-06. Through Sunday, there have already been 31 games settled in regulation in which the teams combined for double-digit goals. A year ago there were only 45 such games across the whole season. We’re still a long way away from the 1980s golden era of goals, but for a league that’s been repeatedly criticized for being too low-scoring, this sudden glut can only be read as a positive development. It’s difficult to point to just one cause for the scoring uptick. The league instituted a number of rule changes at the beginning of the season,1The NHL did something similar after the lockout of 2004-05, introducing a sweeping array of rule changes with the express purpose of increasing goal scoring. and those changes have contributed to an increase in power play opportunities — teams are averaging 3.3 power play opportunities per game so far this season, the highest mark in five years.2Those changes also include a crackdown on slashing and a conservative interpretation of what a center can and cannot do at the faceoff dot: If a center does not stand squarely facing his opponent’s side of the rink, he is subject to being thrown out of the dot. If that happens consecutively to centers from the same team, that team will be subject to a bench minor. The league wants to see less stick work and less cheating on the faceoff dots. And it’s evident the league wasn’t kidding about cracking down on slashing — through Sunday, officials had doled out 623 penalties for slashing. That number was just 791 for all of last season. Through Dec. 17. Differences may not add up because of rounding.Source: ESPN Penalty2016-172017-18Difference Tripping1.081.20+0.12 Slashing0.641.22+0.58 High stick0.690.58-0.10 Hooking1.030.97-0.07 All minors6.657.09+0.44 Goalie interference0.100.09-0.01 The box is getting crowdedMinor penalties per NHL game over the past two seasons Holding0.640.67+0.03 More power play opportunities translate to more odd man advantages, which translate to more shots on net per game: Teams are surrendering more shots per game (31.6) than they have in the past three decades. The math is simple: more shots on goal equals more pucks finding the twine. And even though goals against averages are up across the league — the current mark of 2.76 is the highest it’s been in a decade — the goaltenders cannot be blamed for the league’s recent scoring outburst. Among qualifying goalies,3We looked at goalies who’ve played at least 200 minutes. the league average save percentage (92.18) is slightly higher than the league average expected save percentage (92.13), which is the save percentage an average goalie should post given the quality of shots faced. This suggests that goalies are actually outperforming expectations. During the 2016-17 season, goalies stopped fewer pucks than the data suggested they should have stopped (an actual save percentage of 91.94 versus an expected save percentage of 92.17), and yet goals per game totals remained roughly in line with numbers from the preceding nine seasons.Goalies in 2017-18 are also outperforming their peers from the previous year on high danger shots (unblocked shots with an expected scoring percentage of 9 or greater); this year’s cohort is stopping 79.4 percent of shots considered dangerous, while last year’s stopped just 78.5 percent of those shots.Even though teams are converting their power plays with effectively the same efficiency they did in 2016-17, they’re getting more of those man advantage looks, and likely the rule changes — and not poor goalie play4Goalies are always getting blamed; we need to stop blaming those poor goalies. — offer the truest explanation for the higher-scoring brand of hockey being played in the NHL at the moment. And let’s not forget the cadre of young offensive talent that has flooded the NHL in the past several seasons: Last year, six of the top dozen goal scorers were 25 years old or younger. And the top point getter (Connor McDavid) was just 20. All of these very young men are already sharing the leaderboards with future Hall of Famers like Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin, who are still both in the primes of their careers. This overlap of generational talent could be contributing to all the scoring, too.To be sure, no one in the league office of the NHL is losing sleep over this. More scoring is good news for a league that has been plagued by a spate of absurd calls from pundits to not only tweak the rules of the game, but to change the shape of it too. Reprimanding centers for lining up at the dots incorrectly? Fine, we can all live with that. But making the nets bigger? That’s downright sacrilege. Thanks to the relatively high-scoring climate of the present-day NHL, maybe we can put that tired argument to bed once and for all. read more

Observer is Like Playing Through a Nightmare in the Best Way

first_imgReally good psychological horror has been… well… lacking recently. Part of that is the collective realization that we, as a society, haven’t been terribly great at addressing mental health issues. And part of that is due to a shift in gaming culture. A good chunk of people simply prefer something a bit brisker and more accessible than your usual pants-shittingly terrifying, white-knuckle survival game.Observer is anathema to that. Presented as a mishmash of dystopic cyberpunk and hefty, unnerving atmosphere, it’s a refreshing twist on a classic genre. You play as the observer, essentially a far-future police officer who investigates crimes with the help of a suite of cybernetic augmentations. You can scan for biological evidence in the middle of a crime scene, and even sense electromagnetic fields. But, the most affecting enhancement is a cable that allows you to “jack in” to the memories of someone else.Once you’re in you can wander a dreamscape, always shifting and twisting around you, while hunting for clues. The problem, of course, is that memories, much like dreams, aren’t stable. As you search hallways and rifle through cabinets, the world around you will distort and change. Sometimes, you’ll enter a room, turn around, and find yourself in a totally different local. At others, you’ll be trapped in an endless maze until you work out a simple puzzle. All the while, though, you’re subjected to surreal and disturbing imagery and illusory monsters. IN so doing, Observer pulls away from direct physical threats, and toys with the idea that literal fear is, in itself, a monster worth of a survival horror romp.In any case, the warped reality and constant shuffling of Observer’s world is a fresh take on an old staple. Expect it out later this year.last_img read more

Emery praises new Arsenal signing Guendouzi

first_imgArsenal manager Unai Emery has heaped praise on new signing Mattéo Guendouzi for both his personality and quality after making his Premier League debut last weekendThe French midfielder was signed by Emery earlier this summer for an undisclosed fee from Ligue 2 side FC Lorient and made his competitive debut for Arsenal in their opening day defeat to Manchester City. The encounter was also Emery’s first competitive game in charge of the Gunners, but new side proved to be no match for Pep Guardiola’s mighty City squad at the Emirates with the reigning champions taking a 2-0 win.But a positive for Arsenal was the performance of Guendouzi, who has impressed throughout pre-season and managed to touch the ball more times than any of his new teammates at 72 after being put into the starting line-up.And Emery promises there is more to come from the 19-year-old.Jadon SanchoMerson believes Arsenal should sign Sancho Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho might be the perfect player to play for the Gunners, according to former England international Paul Merson.“It’s his first match here in the Premier League. He has personality and quality and if he is on the pitch he is improving very quickly,” he said, as stated on BBC.Despite a 2-0 home defeat for the club’s first game of the season, Emery noted that there were some positives to take from the match.“The result was 2-0 but I think on the pitch over the 90 minutes we were getting better,” said the 46-year-old.“The first half we didn’t play like we wanted. We spoke at half-time about taking more responsibility for the second half, to do a little more. We wanted to build with the ball and break their lines. I think in the second half we played more like we want.”Arsenal will next travel to Chelsea for their second Premier League fixture of the season.last_img read more

ELECTRIFY YOUR RIDE Charging with RMLDs TimeofUse Rate

first_imgREADING, MA — Below is the final installment in the RMLD’s “Electrify Your Ride” series:While it’s not the only option, many plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) owners opt to charge their vehicle at home for convenience. Most PEVs come with a connector that allows you to plug your vehicle into a standard 120-volt household outlet, known as AC level 1 charging. Owners also have the option of installing a 240-volt AC level 2 charging station at their home to achieve a faster charge. Click here for our previous article, How and Where to Charge Your PEV. Charging your PEV at home will increase your electricity use, but offers a benefit in that the cost per kWh provided by the RMLD is typically lower than most network chargers. As the number of PEVs in our area continues to grow, widespread vehicle charging also has the potential to affect RMLD’s peak electricity use, known as peak demand. Peak demand occurs when many homes and businesses use large amounts of electricity at the same time. If you’re familiar with RMLD’s Shred the Peak program, you know that peak electricity is expensive, affecting power supply costs and customer bills. To that end, controlling peak demand is a key consideration for RMLD as PEV adoption grows in our area. The good news is, RMLD offers an alternative rate called Time-of-Use (TOU) which benefits customers who shift the majority of their electricity use to off-peak hours, all while helping RMLD control the overall high cost of peak demand. This rate encourages customers who own a PEV to charge their vehicle during off-peak hours to help save money on their electric bill and keep peaks down. Conveniently, most PEVs allow owners to control charging from the car (or its app), so owners can plug the car in and set it to start charging at a certain time. Current research also states that most PEV owners are already charging their cars overnight, so little behavior change is required at this time. Here’s how it works: rather than one rate that applies to all hours of the day, Time-of-Use has a higher rate during on-peak hours when electricity is in high demand, and a lower rate during off-peak hours when electricity is less in demand. The time-of-use rate helps customers save money on their electric bill if less than 25% of their usage occurs during on-peak hours. The actual amount saved will depend on the distribution of on-peak versus off-peak hours.On-peak hours are Monday through Friday from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm, excluding holidays. Off-peak hours include weekends, holidays, and all other hours not considered on-peak. The TOU rate requires a different type of meter, so the customer charge is slightly higher, and customers are asked to stay on the rate for a minimum of one year. The TOU rate is available for residential, commercial and industrial RMLD customers. To learn more and find out if TOU may be a fit for you, please contact our Customer Service Department at 781-942-6598.RMLD residential customers who are ready to electrify their ride have until October 31, 2018 to take advantage of our PEV pilot rebate program, which offers a $1,500 rebate for the lease or purchase of a new or used BEV, and a $1,000 rebate for the lease or purchase of a new PHEV+. RMLD also offers residential customers a rebate of 100% of equipment costs up to $500 for the home installation of a networked (or “smart”) AC level 2 charging station. For more information on these rebates, click here. This is the final article in RMLD’s Electrify Your Ride series. We hope the information provided has been of value to those who are considering the purchase of a PEV or who simply want to learn more about this emerging technology. In Senegal some fishermen resist lure of Europe migration

Mesa family survives lightning strike to home Sponsored Stories center_img Natural spring cleaning tips and tricks for your home THIAROYE, Senegal (AP) — Nearly a decade ago, Senegalese fisherman Mor Mar embarked on an illegal sea voyage to Spain, hoping a better life awaited him in Europe.Along with 80 other would-be migrants, each of whom paid smugglers at least $500, he left in a large wooden pirogue from neighboring Mauritania, surviving on rice, biscuits and water until coming within 200 kilometers (125 miles) of the Spanish coast.High, violent waves turned the boat back, and Mar, 39, never tried to make the crossing again. Now following news reports of the more than 1,800 migrants who died this year trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea, Mar says he learned long ago to resist Europe’s pull, having been turned off by stories of limited opportunity and high unemployment.“A lot of young men who managed to get to Europe didn’t succeed in building something for themselves back in Senegal,” he said. “They say the situation is very difficult there.”Mar’s views on migration are shared widely in his native Thiaroye, a fishing town on the outskirts of Senegal’s capital Dakar that 10 years ago was one of the first in the area to record large-scale migration to Europe.Pape Omar Diouf, a town elder, remembers how the initial trickle of migrants soon turned into a rush. “Nearly every day, we were recording departures. Young people were distraught because the fishing industry was nearly dead,” he said. “The dream of going to Europe animated everyone until the deaths started to multiply.”The sheer number of people presumed to have died en route played a big role in dampening the fishermen’s enthusiasm. They now focus on trying to support themselves at home, difficult though it might be. Patients with chronic pain give advice Top Stories “We currently earn between 3,000 and 10,000 CFA francs per day (between $5 and $17) after fierce efforts at sea, but we prefer to limit ourselves to that,” said fellow Thiaroye fisherman El-Hadji Cheikh Ndoye. The lure of Europe remains strong elsewhere in Senegal, however.About 2,300 Senegalese made the perilous land-and-sea voyage to Italy between January and June this year, according to Jo-Lind Roberts-Sene, head of the Senegal office for the International Organization for Migration. The organization helps the government coordinate the return of migrants, and in the past year or so has repatriated about 400 Senegalese who had been seized while working in Tripoli. In the months to come, Senegal’s government plans to more actively discourage people from joining the wave of migrants. The government intends to bolster economic opportunity at home through initiatives such as developing new farms employing up to 40 people each, Sory Kaba, a top official responding to the current migration crisis, told journalists in May.In Thiaroye, fishermen see their sector as a great potential source of jobs for Senegal’s youth — provided the government takes steps to protect them.last_img read more

Customs reissues regulations for shopping in north

first_imgIncreased numbers of Greek Cypriots buying cheap petrol and other items in the north following the fall in the Turkish lira has prompted the customs department to recently reissue the contents of the Green Line regulations on their website.Though people have bought medicine and other items for years for their own use, often without being checked as they cross back over, there are regulations on how much can be bought into the Republic.“Generally speaking, people can take items for up to €260 for their personal use,” customs department spokesman Christos Christou told the Cyprus Mail on Wednesday. “Obviously this does not include drugs, guns or tobacco.”It is not illegal to buy fuel outright, as the Green Line regulations don’t limit the amount of petrol you fill your car with, as long it is for your own use and not for commercial gain. The transfer of medical products intended for personal use of a ‘reasonable quantity’, for up to one month of treatment, has also been allowed by the customs regulations. If they are stopped, people who are found crossing the checkpoint with pharmaceuticals have to sign a form saying that the items are intended for personal use only. They also need to take responsibility for any side effects. It is also allowed to cross with small amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables – up to three kilos –  for personal use, without any documentation. The movement of live animals and animal products across the line is prohibited except the movement of fresh fish and honey for commercial purposes. The transfer of honey for individual use up to three kilos also consists an exception.A total ban on the import of pesticides applies. www.mof.gov.cy/mof/customs.nsfYou May LikeHealth & Human Research7 Early Warning Signs Of Cancer Growing In Your BodyHealth & Human ResearchUndoOpoopa9 Foods You Should Never Refrigerate!OpoopaUndoFitness Engage7 Simple Foods to Lose a Little WeightFitness EngageUndo ‘Ordinary hero’ says EU cooperation succeeded in combating human traffickingUndoBritish woman who claimed gang-rape taken to courtUndoFresh case of Blue Nile virus in northUndoby Taboolaby Taboolalast_img read more
