(Reuters Photo)HIGHLIGHTSRoger Federer beat Stefanos Tsitsipas to lift his eighth title in DubaiFederer revealed “I cried my eyes out” after losing his first ATP Tour final in Marseille in 2000Federer credit his team for his growth over the years on the tennis circuitRoger Federer, on Saturday, became only the second player in history to win 100 ATP title when he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final of Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships but there was a time when Federer was scared that he would go down as one of those players who had talent but never won a title.18 years ago, Federer had registered his first singles win outside the Challenger circuit and on Saturday, he struck a century to get him in a club where Jimmy Connors stood alone for years. After his 100th ATP title victory in Dubai, Federer revealed that at the beginning of his career, he was worried that he would never be able to win a single title on tour.”I’m not kidding if I tell you I hoped I was going to not go down as a player never to win a tournament,” Federer was quoted as saying by ATP website.Made it to 100!Thank you for all your support #RF100 pic.twitter.com/o6lWHsXFhfRoger Federer (@rogerfederer) March 2, 2019Federer had his fair share of nervy moments in the beginning of his career when he lost his first ATP tournament final in Marseille as an 18-year-old. Just two points away from victory, Federer fluffed his chances to lose to fellow Swiss Marc Rosset.”I cried my eyes out. [Marc] told me, ‘Don’t worry about it, you’ll win some more’,” Federer recalled. “I’m like, ‘It’s easy for you to say’,” Federer recalled.Federer then lost another ATP Tour championship match in his hometown Basel but in 2001, he finally made a breakthrough in Milan at the age of 19 to lift his first big trophy.advertisementFederer now looks back at how badly he wanted to win that trophy in Milan and how he was immensely relieved to have picked up a title.”It makes me look back at how it all started and how badly I wanted my first title back in Milan… I was hoping that one day I was going to win a title,” Federer said. “I was so relieved I was not going to be that guy who was going to [have] endless talent with no titles. You can imagine today sitting with 100 how much disbelief there is in between what happened then and now.”.@rogerfederer’s dream just became a reality. #RF100 pic.twitter.com/ke8uLEmD0SATP Tour (@ATP_Tour) March 2, 2019Federer elaborated that early on in his career, he would spent too much of energy in the beginning of tournament and would be exhausted by the time quarter-finals arrived but he figured out his way on the journey at the tour.”I think I needed to get really match tough to be able to be at 100 per cent every single day. That was not easy for me. Checking my emotions, that was not easy,” Federer said.”I remember in the beginning of my career, by the time the quarters came around, I was quite exhausted already because I was so happy winning points, disappointed losing points, I would get to the quarters and be tired.”I knew I had to figure out my own attitude on the court to sustain five matches in five days or six matches in six days. Back in the day, the [ATP] Masters 1000s, what we had to do with the best-of-five set final. That was part of it… a lot of things went right. I’m sure I took a lot of good and bad decisions along the way. I couldn’t have done it without a team. My team has been phenomenal throughout.”Also Read | Roger Federer happy to join Jimmy Connors in 100 ATP titles clubAlso Read | Not my last clay-court season: Roger Federer hoping to enjoy action on red dirtFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. Afghanistan coach Phil Simmons to step down after World Cup 2019Afghanistan coach Phil Simmons to step down after World Cup 2019

first_img Asian News International LondonMay 19, 2019UPDATED: May 19, 2019 22:53 IST Afghanistan head coach Phil Simmons to step down after World Cup 2019 (IANS Photo)HIGHLIGHTSPhil Simmons had taken over as Afghanistan coach in December 2017Afghanistan qualified for the World Cup by winning the qualification tournament in 2018Afghanistan will begin their World Cup campaign vs Australia on June 1Afghanistan coach Phil Simmons said that he will step down from his position after the conclusion of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.”I have thought about it and I have actually given the ACB (Afghanistan Cricket Board) my notice that I will not be renewing my contract. I will move on to something different once my contract expires on July 15,” ESPN Cricinfo quoted Simmons, as saying. The former West Indies opener took the charge back in December 2017 and said that he helped ACB in achieving their goal of qualifying for the premier tournament.”I signed up originally for 18 months and I think I have done a lot in this period. It is time for me to move on to something else now. To want to get to the World Cup – that was ACB’s goal at the time they appointed me,” he said.”My goal is always to leave things better than when I joined: the way we practice, the way we think about the game, the way we assess other teams. I’ve tried to help the players in all those areas,” Simmons added.Recently, Asghar Afghan was removed from captaincy role across formats. And this move of the ACB got criticised by the team’s noted players like Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan. In place of Afghan three different players were given the charge of different formats.Gulbadin Naib was given the leadership role for ODI, while Rahmat Shah and Rashid Khan were put in charge of the Test and T20I teams respectively.advertisementWhile talking on the issue, Simmons asserted that he was not aware of all the changes in the Afghanistan leadership.”No, I was not aware of it. I was not given any reasons. It was the decision of the Afghanistan Cricket Board and the selectors,” Simmons said.”How can I take it? I can’t change it. So I have to just get on with what I have to do and make sure the squad is preparing in the same way I wanted them to prepare barring the [captaincy] change,” he added.Afghanistan will face Australia in their first World Cup 2019 clash on June 1.Also Read | World Cup: No rest days for Hardik Pandya as India all-rounder sweats it out at the gymAlso See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. People have the right to come in here, they pay their dollars and if they want to boo us, they can,” Warner told reporters at Lord’s.”As I said before, I thrive on that stuff, I love it. I went out to the corner there… and copped it.”At the end of the day you have to smile they pay their money to come and watch us and we are grateful for them to come and sit down and watch us.”I always just smile. I take my glasses off and look everyone in the eye and just smile.”That is what it’s about, I am living the dream, I am out here at Lord’s, playing cricket for my country.”advertisementWarner said 12 months out of international cricket and returning to his Randwick-Petersham club had effected a change in his outlook on his sport.”For me it is about enjoying the game,” he said. “When it is taken away from you, you realise what it is all about. Going back to grassroots was fantastic.”I really saw smiles on people’s faces to be out there on a Saturday afternoon, all the volunteers that come down and put time and effort in, whether it is making the drinks, making the lunches.”People’s parents, my mum, my dad coming down, it is just great. You can’t take that for granted. I am just grateful for the second opportunity to come back here and represent my country and do the country proud.”You know I am just excited to be back here and playing World Cup cricket for Australia.”Australia’s next match is back at Lord’s on Saturday against New Zealand, who they beat in the final to win the 2015 World Cup.Also Read | Nasser Hussain’s question to Pakistan fans for India vs England puts him in a spotAlso Read | Watch: Pakistani and Indian fan’s bhangra after Pakistan victory is something you cannot missAlso Watch:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. We were scared in 2nd half: Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka after Watford drawWe were scared in 2nd half: Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka after Watford draw

first_imgWe were scared in 2nd half: Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka after Watford drawArsenal lost control of the game in the second half as they gifted a goal to Tom Cleverley by trying to play out from the back.advertisement Next Reuters LondonSeptember 16, 2019UPDATED: September 16, 2019 13:41 IST Reuters PhotoHIGHLIGHTSArsenal threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at WatfordArsenal have conceded nine goals in their last four Premier League gamesVictory would have put Arsenal in third place in the Premier League points tableArsenal skipper Granit Xhaka accused his team mates of being scared after the Gunners threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Watford in the Premier League on Sunday.Victory would have put Arsenal in third place and they looked comfortable when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice in the first half at Vicarage Road. But Arsenal lost control of the game in the second half as they gifted a goal to Tom Cleverley by trying to play out from the back before a rash challenge by Brazilian David Luiz allowed Roberto Pereyra to score from the spot.Watford then spurned two golden late chances to seal a remarkable comeback victory.Arsenal have conceded nine goals in their last four Premier League games after opening the season with a 1-0 win at Newcastle United. They have also allowed 96 shots at their goal this season, more than any other team in Europe’s top leagues.Watford alone had 31 goal attempts, the most Arsenal have faced since Premier League stats partner Opta began collecting data in 2003-04.Swiss international Xhaka did not hold back in his analysis.”What went wrong? That’s a good question,” he told the BBC. “At half-time we went to the dressing room and everything was good. Everyone was happy but we came out and played such a bad second half. You have to say we are happy to take a point.”We were scared in the second half. We knew they would come at us and push us hard but we have to show more character and not be scared. We have spoken about it. We cannot give a performance like this in the second half.advertisement”We knew they had nothing to lose and they would come for us but we didn’t show our game, we were too scared, nobody wanted the ball,” he added. “You have to stay calm, be mentally strong and we weren’t today.”For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. R Ashwin finds himself more sidelined than someone with his record should be: Sunil GavaskarR Ashwin finds himself more sidelined than someone with his record should be: Sunil Gavaskar

first_imgR Ashwin finds himself more sidelined than someone with his record should be: Sunil GavaskarIndia vs South Africa, 1st Test: Batting great Sunil Gavaskar said R Ashwin has not been given the comfort level he deserves by the team management while talking about his frequent ouster from the Test XI.advertisement India Today Web Desk VisakhapatnamOctober 4, 2019UPDATED: October 4, 2019 13:06 IST India vs South Africa, 1st Test: R Ashwin picked up 2 wickets in the final hour of the second day ( Courtesy by BCCI)HIGHLIGHTSSunil Gavaskar said R Ashwin deserves to be a regular starter for India in TestsAshwin returned to the Test XI after nearly an year’s absenceSomebody who has got almost 350 wickets can’t be sidelined: GavaskarFormer India captain and batting great Sunil Gavaskar has hit out at the Indian team management for not providing the confidence a successful bowler like R Ashwin deserves in international cricket.Sunil Gavaskar said R Ashwin has been sidelined more often than a bowler with his record should be, while pointing out he is one of India’s most successful spinners in the recent past.India vs South Africa, 1st Test Day 3: Live UpdatesR Ashwin returned to the Test XI after nearly an year’s time out of the set-up. Ashwin found himself out of the Test XI due to niggles after just one Test in Australia and the star off-spinner was not included in the side for the 2-Test series in West Indies. Despite having been picked in the squad, India went in with Ravindra Jadeja as their only spinner in the Caribbean.R Ashwin though made an immediate impact on return to the Test XI by picking up 2 wickets towards the close of play on Day 2 of the ongoing 1st Test against South Africa in Visakhapatnam. Ashwin showed signs of his vintage self by getting the wicket of South Africa opener Aiden Markram with a beauty that had flight, dip and turn. However, Ashwin struggled to provide India with a breakthrough in the morning session when Dean Elgar and Faf du Plessis were resisting the Indian charge with sensisble batsmanship against spin.”Ashwin should be a certainty. The fact that he has not been made to feel the comfort level is the reason why we are seeing him struggle a little bit,” Gavaskar told Star Sports during lunch on Day 3.advertisement”He has also got to feel he has got the confidence of the people around him. When you don’t have the confidence of people around you, when you keep getting sidelined, then you try a little too hard.”I think, there is always these little comparisons he suffers from. When playing in Australia, he is compared to Nathan Lyon. Nathan Lyon is doing that doing this. But Lyon is bowling to the Indian batsmen. Similarly, in England, when Moeen Ali got 6 or 7 wickets, you say he didn’t get any wickets’. It can happen.”I think there is more to it than just cricketing performances which is the reason he just finds himself sidelined more often than somebody with his record should be. Somebody who has got almost 350 wickets can’t be sidelined as regularly as he has been.”While hinting India could have afforded to play Ashwin in place of an extra batsman in West Indies, Sunil Gavaskar suggested India don’t need 6 regular batsman at home in the ongoing series against South Africa.”If it’s going to be hot conditions like this, you need an extra bowler. Whether it’s a spinner or seamer, it depends on the surface. I think India can afford to play 5 batsmen and with Ashwin who has 4 Test hundreds and Jadeja who is batting well with due respect to this South African attack,” Gavaskar said.India got an early breakthrough on Day 3 when Ishant Sharma got the wicket of Temba Bavuma but Dean Elgar and Faf du Plessis combined to stitch a hundred-plus stand to put some pressure on India for the first time in the ongoing Test. Also Read | Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah retain dominance in ICC ODI rankingsAlso See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
