Trump’s order on ‘anti-Semitism’ aimed at pro-Palestinian movement

first_imgPhoto credit: BDS MovementPresident Donald Trump’s executive order issued Dec.11 would deny federal funds from schools that allow “anti-Semitism” on their campuses, including some anti-Israel activities.  It is intended to squelch defense of — or even discussion about — Palestinian rights, and is the result of intense reactionary efforts to do so.That same day, the New York Times published an op-ed by Jared Kusher, Trump’s son-in-law and adviser, describing anti-Semitism as “targeting the state of Israel” and “claiming its existence is a racist endeavor.” He emphasized: “Anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism,” a view vehemently denounced by the growing global movement which opposes Israeli oppression of Palestinians, occupation of their lands, illegal settlements, evictions of families, blockade of Gaza and racism toward African migrants.Trump’s dictate violates free speech rights by targeting campus groups that criticize Israel’s anti-Palestinian policies and oppose Washington’s political and financial support for Israel — to the tune of billions of dollars a year. It is specifically intended to suppress the burgeoning pro-Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign, which has won campus victories throughout the U.S., as enumerated by National Students for Justice in Palestine. The BDS campaign is “a Palestinian-led [global] movement for freedom, justice and equality, [which] upholds the principle that Palestinians are entitled to the same rights as the rest of humanity. Inspired by the South African anti-apartheid movement, the BDS call urges action to pressure Israel to comply with international law.” (bdsmovement.net)Jewish Voice for Peace said Trump’s order creates a “climate of fear,” with college administrations “incentivized” to silence student activism and teaching about Palestine, “while white supremacist organizing, which has been increasing under Trump, will go unchecked.” Israel: oppressor nation, apartheid stateOn July 19, 2018, Israel passed an even more discriminatory law than the 65 existing laws oppressing Palestinians. JVP responded that day: “The Nation-State law establishes that racist and discriminatory practices against Palestinians and non-Jews are legal, [that] only Jewish people have the right to self-determination, demotes Arabic from an official language … [and] places national value on the development of  ‘Jewish settlement.’ ”JVP Deputy Director Rabbi Alissa Wise added:  “The Nation-State bill cements Israel as an apartheid state — from the West Bank to Gaza to Jerusalem to Haifa. Palestinians, no matter where they live, are controlled by an Israeli government and military that robs them of basic rights and freedoms.”In March, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defined Israel as “the national state, not of all its citizens, but only of the Jewish people.” (npr.org, March 11) Trump: pro-Zionist anti-SemiteTrump is aligned with the Israeli government, unsurprisingly, since  U.S. imperialism has always supported the Zionist state. He moved the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem on May 14, 2018, recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights (part of Syria) and declared legal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which violate international law and flout U.N. Security Council resolutions.Although the bigot-in-chief feigns concern about anti-Semitism, he resorts to anti-Jewish tropes himself. He even uses anti-Jewish stereotypes when appealing to Jewish audiences for support.  His election campaign ran ads with anti-Semitic overtones. In an affront to Jewish people, but in recognition of Trump’s evangelical Christian base, the White House featured two anti-Semitic ministers at a “Hanukkah” celebration following the executive-order-signing ceremony.  Trump praised Pastor Robert Jeffress, who spoke there. Right-Wing Watch reported Jeffress said in 2011 that Jewish people, Muslims and gay people “are destined for Hell.” (Dec. 13)Rev. John C. Hagee, who founded Christians United for Israel, shockingly said, “The Holocaust was part of God’s plan to return the Jews to Israel”! (NY Times, Dec. 13) He and Jeffress prayed at the U.S. Embassy’s opening in Jerusalem. And who can forget Trump’s calling neo-Nazis “very fine people” after they marched in Charlottesville, Va., chanting, “Jews will not replace us,” while carrying bats and torches and sporting swastikas. Many progressive people call Trump a white nationalist, with good reason.Super-rich promote bigotryAnti-Semitism, Islamophobia, racism, xenophobia and all bigotry are promulgated by the capitalist class which seeks to divide the multinational, multigendered working class and prevent its many sectors from uniting. Conservative politicians, white evangelicals and far-right groups spread this ideology, disseminated through social media and popular culture.Individuals who assault Jewish people, often white male bigots, are also usually hostile to Muslims, people of African descent, Latinx immigrants, women and LGBTQ2+ people. Even if that isn’t the case, as in the recent attack at a Jewish-owned market in Jersey City, N.J., it shows the impact of anti-Semitism, as well as anger at police repression. There has been a rise in hate crimes since Trump moved into the White House. His blatant promotion of racism, xenophobia, anti-Muslim hostility, and misogyny have emboldened the far right. The way to stop anti-Semitism is to build a strong multinational movement that opposes all forms of bigotry. Durkin’s grandparents fled anti-Jewish pogroms in 1907 in Eastern Poland, then annexed by tsarist Russia.FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thisFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thislast_img read more

South Africa’s 50 ways of headwrapping

first_imgThere are many ways to wear a doek, or duku – an African headwrap. In fact, South African entrepreneur Princess Ofentse Maluleke can show you up to 50 different, fashionable styles. She recently published a tutorial book, 50 Shades of Duku, after she realised many of her customers had trouble tying their doeks.“My friend and I sell headwraps at the market. Customers would say they would love to wear a headwrap but don’t know how to tie it,” she explains.“You get videos on YouTube on how to tie a headwrap, but when you have several minutes to get ready in the morning, you don’t have time to look up a website.”Princess Ofentse Maluleke, who sells her own shea butter and wrote a book on how to style an African headwrap, says she has been an entrepreneur all her life. (Image: Taji Shop, Shopify)The writing processIt prompted her to write a book about different styles. “At the time I started, I only had 30 styles. The other 20 I made up – I mixed styles and created new ones. It really pushed my mental boundaries.”Maluleke says she wanted to do a good number of styles. “I thought 20 was too little. I wanted a significant number, because I wanted it to be like a klap (punch). I felt 50 was enough, not too much to burn me out.”She started writing her book in April this year and finished it by the end of May. The electronic book version has been available on her website since 31 May. “My aim is to write at least 10 books in my lifetime about different things.”Her supportHer book is sold as an e-book, as a print book or as a combination book and headwrap. “I have had Canadians and American tourists saying that my combo was a great gift to take back home.”Maluleke, a business science degree graduate, says she is very excited about this project. “I feel like I am at the right place in my life.”Her family is proud of her achievements. “They are very supportive. My brother, for instance, funded my first batch of books. My mom, Sally Tsipe, is distributing the books in KwaZulu-Natal and my sister, Omolemo Tsipe, distributes them in Cape Town.”Her husband and a friend helped her to finish the book.Part-time entrepreneurAs the chief executive officer of the Taji Shop, Maluleke says she has been a part-time entrepreneur all her life. “In high school I was known as the ‘Popcorn Lady’ and in university I would redesign old clothes to sell. I taught myself to sew. I started as a full-time entrepreneur earlier this year.”It began with selling her own organic shea butter body cream. “I get the shea butter raw from Ghana and add different oils to make the product easier to use. You can use it for your skin and hair.”Her duku partiesMaluleke, who lives in Johannesburg, is often invited to women’s parties such as baby showers to teach her duku styles. “I do one-on-ones and small groups. Showing a couple of duku styles is a great educational element at women’s events.”In many African cultures, a young bride wears a duku as a sign of respect, because they cover their heads, she explains. “I am also a young bride.”But you don’t have to be a young bride to wear a duku. “Also, you can make it look fashionable.”There are also no-nos: In an interview on radio station Power FM 987, Maluleke warned that wearing a headwrap tied too tightly could cause a “scarf headache”. Also, matching a doek to your outfit could be done wrong. “Rather stick to neutrals and go wild on yourdoek.”Another tip is to use an under-scarf – some fabric or another headwrap – to add volume to your doek.Maluleke also hosts her own duku parties where her doek combos are sold, and she teaches her audience how to use a T- shirt instead of a headwrap to create a doek style.Next up, she plans to take her parties all over South Africa.Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website?See Using SouthAfrica.info materiallast_img read more

Military appeal court orders retrial in sexual assault case

first_imgOTTAWA – A retrial has been ordered in the case of a Canadian Forces member who was acquitted last year of sexually assaulting a female colleague while the two were deployed on a training exercise in Jamaica in 2015.A military judge found Cpl. Simon Cadieux not guilty of sexual assault and drunkenness following a court martial in May 2017, but the Court Martial Appeal Court says the judge erred in his ruling.Cadieux and his special forces unit were in Jamaica in November 2015 when they held a barbecue that included drinking and partying to mark the end of a training exercise.According to testimony delivered during the initial court martial, a drunk Cadieux went into a female-only tent after the party where he woke up another service member and the two kissed in the dark before she realized he wasn’t who she thought. The woman also testified that she was woken up by a touch to the pelvic area, which Cadieux said was accidental.Military judge Lt.-Col. Louis-Vincent d’Auteuil ultimately acquitted Cadieux after concluding the corporal did not enter the tent intending to kiss or engage in any sexual activity with his colleague. He also concluded the woman had initiated the kiss and Cadieux subjectively believed she had consented to it.But in the Appeal Court’s ruling, a three-judge panel unanimously agreed that d’Auteuil did not properly test Cadieux’s argument that he believed the woman had consented to the kiss given various other factors. Those included his admitting to having woken her up, being intoxicated, that it was dark in the tent and that “there was no romantic relationship between the two of them before or during the exercise or on the evening in question.“In other words, and stated rather bluntly, the complainant had no reason to kiss Cpl. Cadieux, he had no reason to believe she wanted to kiss him, and, importantly, immediately prior to the actual kissing, he had no reason to believe she wanted him to kiss her.”The Appeal Court’s decision to order a retrial comes as military commanders have been cracking down on sexual misconduct in the Forces, and was welcomed on Friday by Col. Bruce MacGregor, the military’s top prosecutor.“The recent decision in the Cadieux case from the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada is but another example of our efforts to pursue justice for all victims of sexual misconduct by enforcing the rule of law and promoting the discipline, efficiency and morale of the women and men who proudly serve,” he said.last_img read more

Big city mayors press Liberals to speed up flow of affordable housing

first_imgOTTAWA – The mayors of Canada’s biggest cities say they don’t need the federal government to pony up more money for affordable housing units — they just need the cash to move faster. The Liberals’ housing plan unveiled last year outlines billions in federal cash and matching funds from the provinces and territories, but much of the money will take years to flow.Included in the plan was cash to build 100,000 new affordable housing units and repair 240,000 more.Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson, who chairs the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ big-city mayors caucus, said the mayors pressed Finance Minister Bill Morneau on Thursday to loosen the federal purse strings so the repair money is spent in the coming fiscal year while details are worked out on cash for new construction. There is already a lag between when work takes place and federal dollars are spent because cash only flows once cities and provinces submit receipts for reimbursement. The mayors want to avoid a long delay in spending on repairs and new funding agreements for social housing providers to avoid losing thousands of units and families losing their homes.“We can put new roofs and new windows and new boilers and new furnaces and new insulation in aging social housing buildings this year and create jobs and get them back into supply,” Iveson said during a midday press conference.“There are units that are not … habitable right now because they’ve been waiting so long for that investment and we’d like to get those back in the hands of Canadians who need them and create the jobs now, not in a year or two.”Infrastructure Minister Amarjeet Sohi said the Liberals want to work with cities on the issue.“We’re here to find solutions to problems and this is a problem that has been identified.”Iveson and other big city mayors were in the capital for a pre-budget version of political speed dating, meeting individual cabinet ministers throughout the day to outline their wants and needs for the Feb. 27 federal budget.Other groups have joined a similar fray for federal help to cities in the coming budget. The Canadian Global Cities Council, an umbrella group for multiple chambers of commerce and boards of trades, last week called on the Liberals to craft a national urban strategy to better identify where money is needed. For the first time in years, the municipal leaders didn’t ask for any more infrastructure money from the federal government, having received $180 billion over 10 years in combined spending from programs set up by the Liberals and the previous Conservative government. The first batch of money from the Liberals’ transit and water system program was supposed to be spent by the end of March, but delays in projects have required the Liberals to extend the spending deadline to 2020.Federal and provincial officials say the lessons learned from the first phase of the program will be used in designing the second phase. The Liberals are aiming to finalize funding agreements by March 31 for $33 billion in upcoming infrastructure, which is part of the $81.2 billion in the Liberals’ long-term infrastructure program that Sohi specifically oversees.Provinces are pushing the government to let them use the dollars on planned transit and water system projects, rather than put the money towards new projects.Meanwhile, cities are asking the Liberals to press the provinces to cover a larger slice of project costs to reduce the financial contribution from cities.Toronto Mayor John Tory said the federal money was meant only to apply for new projects and not to help provinces replace their own spending.“We have new projects that the federal government are going to fund. That’s where that funding should go and the province should be stepping up to match.”— Follow @jpress on Twitter.last_img read more

Canadian Oil prices expected to improve in 2019

first_imgCALGARY, AB – With increased demand, improved refineries, improving transportation capacity and mandatory productions cuts, prices should improve in 2019 says Deloitte’s Resource Evaluation and Advisory (REA) group. In its latest report, Deloitte says these factors should begin to reduce the current oversupply of Canadian oil and help with WTI prices that were present in the final quarter of 2018.“The severe imbalance between Canada’s production and its capacity to export that oil caused Canadian oil price benchmarks to collapse over the past few months,” says Andrew Botterill, Partner, REA group. “Heavy oil differentials were as high as US$45 per barrel in mid-November while light oil differentials reached as much as US$35 per barrel, although they did begin to drop back slightly toward the end of the year as refineries in the U.S Midwest returned to more normal utilization rates for Canadian oil.” Botterill noted storage stockpile volumes in Alberta rose to approximately 35 million barrels in 2018 yet the Canadian supply remains an issue. With the Alberta Government imposing mandatory production cuts which take place in January, this should reduce production by 325,000 barrels a day until the excess storage volumes dissipate, after which the cuts will drop to 95,000 barrels a day for the rest of 2019.Deloitte expects this will decrease discrepancies for Canadian oil price benchmarks and increase provincial royalty revenues in Alberta and in Saskatchewan, where there are no mandatory production cuts but where crude prices will also rise because of the reduction in oversupply.Canadian oil prices should also strengthen in 2019 because of improved export capacity as a result of the Alberta government’s plan to purchase additional rail cars to transport crude oil and the extra rail cars should increase exports by 120,000 barrels a day by 2020. With expanded capacity of Enbridge’s Line 3 Pipeline will add approximately 370,000 barrels a day of export capacity, an increase of about nine percent. The pipeline transports a variety of Canadian crude oil to the United States notes Deloitte.“Increased demand for Canadian oil from Alberta’s Sturgeon refinery and from U.S. Gulf Coast refineries looking to replace some of their heavy crude supplies that used to come from Mexico and Venezuela is another reason we expect the price differential with WTI to continue narrowing in 2019 and beyond,” says Botterill. “At this point, we are forecasting a price of US$58per barrel for WTI this year and C$50 per barrel for WCS”.Botterill says Deloitte expects Canadian natural gas prices to continue to trail behind the Henry Hub benchmark in 2019 despite some recent gains. No near term growth is expected for Canadian natural gas production because of high U.S. production rates and the possibility that short-term demand in Alberta could slow as oil sands producers – whose extraction efforts account for about 40 percent of natural gas consumption in the province – scale back their operations due to the mandatory production cuts. Several natural gas producers continue to take advantage of any available price diversification opportunities, however, including shipping volumes to East Coast markets where prices are higher.“We expect low AECO prices to continue for several years given the current situation,” says Botterill. “Our current forecast for AECO is C$1.75 per Mcf in 2019 while Henry Hub should be US$3 per Mcf.” For Deloitte’s December 31, 2018 oil and gas price forecast; CLICK HERElast_img read more
