Exclusive – Liverpool legend ‘baffled’ by Rodgers’ persistence with Balotelli

first_imgLiverpool legend John Aldridge has told talkSPORT he is “baffled” that manager Brendan Rodgers continues to favour striker Mario Balotelli to lead the line for the misfiring Reds. The £16million forward has failed to score a Premier League goal since joining the Merseyside outfit, who are struggling in 11th place in the absence of injured frontman Daniel Sturridge.Balotelli’s poor form saw him dropped for the side’s Champions League trip to Real Madrid, but he was immediately reinstated into the starting XI for the weekend’s league clash with Chelsea, with the table-topping Blues winning 2-1 at Anfield. And ex-striker Aldridge, who netted 63 goals in 104 appearances for Liverpool, believes the Italian is out of place with his current role in the Reds’ line-up.“For me – and I played most of my career leading the line as a lone striker – Balotelli looks out of place, he looks uncomfortable,” the Kop hero told Drivetime.“He doesn’t know where to run, or when to run, in that role.“He’s played a lot of his time in the hole behind the striker, as a number ten, or in the wide position, yet you see him leading the line for us and he’s so frustrating because he’s running offside and he’s coming into wide areas, then we’ve got no one in the box.“As a striker you’ve got to isolate your centre-backs, you’ve got to get on their shoulders, work them and peel off them and get in behind the back-four.“You also create space for your team-mates with that movement, but Mario doesn’t know what to do.“So I’m a little bit baffled Brendan has persisted with that.”last_img read more
